Penelope Gilbert and the Children of Azure edition by Emily A Steward Children eBooks
Penelope Gilbert discovers that she has an ability to shape-shift into anything she can imagine, including objects and other people. Soon after, she finds herself hunted, along with the other Children of Azure, who all have displayed various cool powers and thereby have made themselves targets for someone who wants to capture them -- or worse. This is a fun, exciting adventure, and I had a blast following Penelope and her friends on their journey to stop an evil despot and save the other Children of Azure from his grasp. Penelope is a smart, quirky, and relatable heroine, and she's accompanied by a great cast of characters. I enjoyed Penelope's exploration of her powers, and the challenges she faced mastering her abilities, especially given the risk involved in shape-shifting. The descriptions of each of the kids' powers, and the individual growth each has with honing his or her skills, drew me into the story and kept me hooked. I liked how their powers didn't make them invincible. They could still be captured. They could still be injured, even killed. And this vulnerability highlighted just what a formidable opponent they faced and kept me turning the pages from start to finish. Another element of the story that I absolutely loved was the world of Azure, a hidden world above ours, and the mythology behind the history of that world.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel!

Penelope Gilbert and the Children of Azure edition by Emily A Steward Children eBooks Reviews
I loved this. Fun filled adventure, drama, pirates! Kind of a steam-punk feel to it, very good read aimed at young readers but definitely enjoyable for us older people too!
“Penelope Gilbert and the Children of Azure,” is the delightful first novel by author Emily A. Steward and artist Chad Steward, a husband and wife team. It takes place in a fictional world divided into two levels, Earth and Azure, separated by a rending wind that prevents travel between them except through magical tunnels. Azure has been taken over by an evil insane despot who wants all magic for himself, draining and killing everyone who possesses it. But some rebel and secretly send their children to Earth to hide them, only to have them hunted down and captured. Penelope is one such child, who after being captured, leads an escape from the king’s prison.
This is the first book of a series so we will have to wait and see where this goes, but it’s a good start. It’s part of a larger “Clean Reads” effort, which gives Steward some problems. You can see it in the beginning, her attempts to stay away from direct violence. Dropping the gun, knowing it will go off and shoot the bad guys rather than pulling the trigger directly for instance. It makes for awkward moments, but she wisely gets over this as she progresses.
All together though, it’s a worthy read. Certainly one you kid will like. I’ll be curious where this Clean Reads effort leads as well and how they eventually refine its rules.
Very interesting, exiting plot. I loved the adventure in it and the parts where Penelope turned into different things, especially her rude teacher! The ending has a special twist that I never expected. I can't wait for the next book in this amazing series! So exciting! I'd recommend this book for children 11-15.
Absolutely loved it! The suspense, mystery and unexpected happenings take you on a wild adventure. The characters are built very well and the story line is very enticing and original. I loved the detailed description of the surroundings and scenery. The art work was spectacular! I also loved the little love triangle that was happening. this was a book i had a hard time putting down. Theres going to be a second right?
This book was recommended by a friend, and I was not disappointed! Well written, with believable characters and just enough drama. Plenty of imagination adds dimension to the story. Looking forward to reading more!
A great middle grade adventure book! This is one of those books that you can't put down because you want to see what happens next. Great for middle grade readers who like fantasy and adventure. This would be a great choice for a school read because it has a mix of fantasy and adventure and humor and works for boys and girls.
As a child I enjoyed reading books with the characters around my own age going into an adventure. It was an added bonus for me if those adventures included fantasy, science fiction and friendships. This book was wonderful because it relates to children in their own world, and then brings them into another one with just enough detail for them to create a picture in their own imaginations. Great Story!
