I don't mind reading historical fiction, so long as it is well written. This book is part 2 of a series of 3 books. The first book, Brules, was really, really good. Perhaps up there with Little Big Man. This book, within the first 120 pages, has some problems. First off, and most annoyingly, Frank Grouard becomes Frank Girard (in truth, there was a Fred Girard, but he was with Custer). And Baptiste Pourier is talked about as a former scout for Custer in his Black Hills expedition. Well, this latter error I can deal with, considering it is a work of fiction, but why swap Grouard for Girard. Furthermore, and sadly, practically all of the charm and wit of the main character (Cat Brules) from the first book is gone. This time around he is rather annoying and not that smart. Also, there are some sloppy errors, such as one instance when the author goes from speaking about the Sioux, then to the Comanches and then back to the Sioux. However, he very clearly mixed the two tribes up at one point and the editor didn't catch it, assuming the book was edited. Overall, I really like the author's writing so feel bad about pointing these things out. Luckily it reads rather quickly. Combs' best writing is when he is making up his own story. It seems to me that once he places his main character in real events and around real people, he is not as efficient. I will follow up on this when finished.Final review, April 22, 2013
I wish I could give this book four stars, but I can't. The bad: Well, about the first 240 pages which cover Cat Brules' time in the Sioux War. Knowing a thing or two about the Great Sioux War, this part of the book was greatly disappointing. The last 470 pages were much better, well... most of them anyway. There was one stupid scene when Brules sneaks into the tent of a sleeping officer and pulls a gun on him which I found to be somewhat stupid and not too believable. For that matter, I wasn't even sure it was necessary to the story. The last part of the book deals a little with the Apache wars of the early 1880s. I'm not as read up on this topic, so can't comment on the authenticity of this part of the story. However, the author did get some of Tzoe's (a.k.a. Peaches) story correct. The good: Parts of this book were brilliant. Brules' time with the Mormom family and his relationship with Melisande were very good. In fact, it was a great love story. The end was sad. So despite my criticisms, I cared enough about the characters to have an emotional experience at the end. So my recommendation is this... if you have read Brules (part 1 of this series), then read this book, but just be forewarned, if you care at all about an accurate telling of the Sioux War of 1876, even though this is a work of fiction, forget about it. But quite a bit of the book is worth reading, at least in my opinion.

Fantastic reading. But Brules is better. I've read this one twice.
Is very good book about the West. It is a follow-up of an earlier book called "Brules", which was truly the best Western I have ever read. It is definitely in the same class as Lonesome Dove and Centennial. I highly recommend it.
Being an outdoorsman I really liked the realism of nature. Being a fan of the old west, especially the plains, I enjoyed the panoramic scenes the writer painted. I really was amazed at the historic accuracy and the vivid descriptions of the Native Americans and the mountain men. I must read for everyone who loves the west!
This one is only 1 of 3 books which I keep in my own personal library and it's only one of probably 2 books which I read and then Immediately re-read because of it's entertainment value... it's theme centers around the "Old West"... so it's not for everyone, but if you have any interest in the "old west"... this one's a great, entertaining read.
You cannot go wrong with books by Harry Combs. His accurate historical accounts that he weaves in and out his very descriptive stories is a lesson you don't know you are even getting. You cannot predict the outcome of his books. But you will love them.
Love these Harry Combs stories about Cat Brules (The Scout; Brules; and Legend of the Painted Horse). Immerse yourself in the wild wild West in the days of the Indians, Buffalo Bill, mountain men like Cat Brules in page-turning, hold-your-breath- advertures What realistic tales are in store for you
This is a worthy sequel to "Brules". It takes place after "Brules" painful ending, and in order to forget that pain he signs on as a scout for the army fighting the Sioux in Montana. He's there at the battle of the Little Big Horn, which is told in a largely accurate fashion. The author goes on to lay some speculation on top of the accurate historical detail, making for intriguing reading. Later on, Brules finds the second love of his life and we follow his scouting career all the way across the West to Arizona and the Apache campaigns with General Crook. Everything is based on accurate historical data, with a little license applied in order for Combs' characters to become a part of the story. A great, but sometimes melancholy read.
