That the writer possesses a great deal of storytelling skill there's absolutely no doubt. Karen Miller knows enough about writing characters, suspense and plot. But whenever I finish books like these I strongly feel I've been the target of a great deal of psychological manipulation. All characters being regularly smeared with a great deal of mud, tortured in one form or another throughout the series, loosing or gaining like-ability depending on the mood swings of the Author. Ultimately a journey that lacks a destination in any sense of the word.

The story is good enough and without going into it too much, I'd say another version of game of thrones, with even less fantasy. The characters are written well enough (though they could be improved). The plot itself is full of pointless drama and unenjoyable twist and turns that while interesting and occasionally humorous, are ultimately more depressing than enjoyable. And I don't say this lightly - too many good authors forget that a story is meant to entertain, not dangle a carrot in front of their readers as though they (the readers) were donkeys. I've never read from Karen Miller before, and after this I'd greatly hesitate to buy another one of her works. Because in the end, the book as a whole is an interesting chore to read, but nothing more.

Whenever I finish books like this I want to scream at the author - "What was your point?" I don't appreciate soap-opera styled books that meander aimlessly through themselves like a pig in slop. I sorely wish kindle had a categorization for them so I'd know how to avoid it.

So many characters intertwined, hinted at archenemy whose relation to characters is muddled, too many lost main characters but 4 stars for entertainment value.
Great start to a new series. I liked the narrators voices of the various characters. I did get a little bored towards the end and I think some of it could have been left out, but still a good listen.
Great promise and a good story - the issue is this book is all about setting everything else up, seems like a book long prologue. Kept waiting to get into story. Really looking forward to the rest
Excellent new book by Karen Miller. The start of a new series. Miller is consistently good and this promises to be a star in her library of fantasy gems.
Two kingdoms have new heirs with problems, one through foul play, the other has two brothers who don't trust each other. Power, magic, and lust are great motivators. Enjoy this great series opener for what it is...a rip roaring roller coaster.
I Hate to give this three stars because I love Karen Miller as a writer. I have read almost all of her other books and enjoy her style of writing immensely. That being said, I just don't know how to feel about any of the characters in this book. So many of them died and s***ty things continued to happen. The End.

That being said, I will read the next book and hope that every s***ty thing that happens in this book was nothing but a setup for the next book in the series...(which hopefully will have better characters that don't die in horrible ways and less dead babies)

This is a great book. I think I'd give it 4 and 1/2 stars if I could, but it weighs closer to a five.

There are some truly wonderful pages in this book, including some unimaginably heart-breaking moments that are by themselves worth the read. One scene in particular, near the end, was exceptionally powerful for me. I rarely find that in a book. Even one scene like that is worth the cost, and the scene in this book I'm referring to is jaw-dropping powerful on many levels.

Some scenes had me scratching my head, too, but I rarely read a book where I don't find some things that just don't make sense to me.

This one isn't for the kids. It's Adult Fantasy, and it's good. If you love Fantasy with teeth, look no further.

I eagerly await book 2. Until then, The Falcon Throne deserves a re-read.

I purchased the book on my kindle after reading the sample. Turns out, the characters in the sample come back for maybe two more pages in the entire rest of the book. Instead, there are more characters added with almost every chapter. New plotlines on every other page. New locations with their own natives and dialects and history. This book couldn't make up its mind about what story it wanted to tell. About two thirds of the way through, I gave up and skipped to the end... only to find that it's basically a cliffhanger. No fun, at all, AND a complete waste of time.
